This fall, Canada Pork International will present a series of seminars in Central and South America. The seminars will take place in the cities of San Pedro Sula (Honduras), Panama City (Panama), Quito (Ecuador) and Santiago (Chile), from September 19 to September 26, 2014. The seminars will present an overview of the Canadian pork industry and Canadian pork exports. In addition, there will be time for business-to-business meetings with potential buyers and distributors for each market. Canada has Free Trade Agreements (FTA) in force with two of these countries, which provide a competitive advantage for Canadian pork exports. Canada also has a long standing commercial relationship with Chile and an FTA since 1997. The FTA with Panama has been in force since April 2013 and, Canada signed an agreement with Honduras in November 2013. There are also veterinary agreements in place in these three markets. Although Canada does not have an FTA or any existing veterinary agreement with Ecuador nonetheless Ecuador has become an important market for Canadian pork. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently working to secure access to Ecuador and towards obtaining System Approval for CFIA registered pork plants. Canada exported 12,320 tonnes of Canadian pork and pork products to Chile in 2013 compared to 2012 with exports of only 3,884 tonnes, an increase of 217.1%. Exports to Panama have been consistent throughout the last two years, slightly up by 4.6%, with 2,377 tonnes in 2012 and 2,486 tonnes in 2013. As for Ecuador, the market has registered growth from 434 tonnes in 2012 to 3,513 tonnes in 2013, an increase of 708.7%. Finally, exports to Honduras remain low with 26 tonnes in 2012 and 38 tonnes in 2013, an increase of 43%. Export growth is anticipated once the FTA is ratified later this year by Canada and Honduras. The substantial increase in volume of Canadian pork and pork products to Chile, Panama, Ecuador and Honduras provides more opportunities for Canadian pork export businesses in these markets in Latin America.
