On July 15, representatives from Canada Pork International met with Ms. Nathalie Béchamp, the new Minister-Counsellor for the Embassy of Canada to Russia. Ms. Béchamp will move to Moscow at the end of August. Geoff Adams from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), and representatives from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) were also in attendance.
The meeting offered CPI the opportunity to present in detail the Canadian pork industry’s interest in Russia and to discuss specific issues such as the relisting of Canadian plants and the Export Protocol.
CPI has received confirmation that the Canadian Government considers the Russian market very important to the Canadian pork industry and that it will continue to take an active approach to resolve access issues.
Russia remains a priority market for CPI. With a value of C$ 260.2 million, Russia was Canada’s fourth largest market for pork and pork products in 2013, with 92 614 tonnes. For the period of January 1 to May 31, 2014, Russian imports of pork from Canada recorded growth of 80.3 % in volume with a total of 67 091 tonnes compared to 37 214 for the same period in 2013, and an increase of 105 % in value with C$ 212.7 million compared to C$ 103.7 million for the same period in 2013. Russia is now Canada’s third largest market for pork and pork products, after the United States and Japan.
Despite the issues and challenges the industry has faced in the last year, 2014 could be a record year for Canadian pork exports to Russia. Preliminary reports forecast that the value of pork exports to Russia will reach approximately C$ 550 million by the end of 2014 if trade continues at the same pace.
