The 23rd annual World Food Moscow, the foremost international food exhibition in Russia took place in September. A major meeting place for the food and beverage industry, this event is a vibrant source of products for the Russian market. Over 1600 companies from 65 countries exhibited their products and services to the 25,000 buyers visiting the show.

Canada Pork International had a pavilion in the meat sector, one of the main sectors of World Food Moscow. Twenty-two participants from seven CPI member companies had the chance to meet with customers and potential clients.

While this year has not been an easy one for Canadian pork exports to Russia, there is reason to be optimistic. As a result of the negotiations between Canadian and Russian veterinary services, some positive outcomes have been reached. Early last month, a number of Canadian plants were allowed access to the Russian market with more expected before the end of the year.

Russia remains a priority market for CPI and our work there will continue as Canada intends to remain a major player in this market.

For the first time in many years, CPI will not participate at the ProdExpo show in Moscow in February 2014. Our participation will be re-assessed for 2015 event if market conditions improve for the industry in general and if it is determined that Canadian exporters would benefit from participation at this trade show.

Canadian pork exports to Russia for the period of January 1 to July 31, 2013 was 45 430 tonnes (value $125 million) compared to 118 472 tonnes (value $280 million) for the same period in 2012.

In 2012, Canadian exports of pork and pork products to Russia reached 207,123 tonnes valued at $492 million.
